“That’s not even what that means!”

“Says who?”

“The dictionary? Merriam-Webster? I don’t know.”

“There are a lot of dictionaries.”

“Well pick one and look it up. That’s not what it means.”

“Maybe I’ll write a dictionary.”

“You’re not going to write a dictionary.”

“Why not?”

“Would it matter? Your dictionary would just be wrong because that’s not what it means.”

“So a dictionary can be wrong?”

“Don’t.”

“So who’s to say that’s not what it means?”

“The American people then. The college professors. The people who write papers using that word.”

“A word can mean anything to anyone.”

“Well that’s not what it means to me and I’m the person you’re talking to. And that’s not what it means to anyone except you.”

“My mom uses it that way.”

“Except you and your mom.”

“Maybe it’s a Pittsburgh thing?”

“Then Pittsburgh is wrong!”

“That’s being prescriptive! Right? That’s the word? Or is it descriptive?”

“You’re not a linguist.”

“Descriptive! You’re being descriptive because you’re telling me how to use words.”

“That’s not even what that means!”

“Says who?”
