‘Dear Sarah’ – Sullivan Ballou, a Civil War soldier

So I was watching Ken Burns’ documentary on the Civil War this evening. It’s one of the greatest pieces of television I’ve ever seen, and I will routinely throw it on for background noise while I work. I wasn’t paying any particular attention as the North mobilized to face the South at the battle of First Bull Run, but as the episode drew to a close, these words caught my ear.  They were so beautifully and poignantly written, and I was amazed by the breadth of the vocabulary and the fluidity of the letter. Somewhere amid the technological advances and the oversimplification of communication today, we have lost the ability to capture sentiments such as these:

If you haven’t watched Ken Burns’ Civil War, I highly recommend it. You can find it on Netflix, but this is something you want to own.
